DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN!

I thought it was a typo at first. I was looking in the TV guide and saw that the same film was printed below the one I had been looking at. Then I noticed that the channel was running the same film continually back to back for the whole day. What madness was this? I decided to check the date. Yes, of course, I knew it was 2nd February today but was that the date in question? You can bet your Punxsutawney Phil it is. 2nd February is Groundhog Day.

I think it is widely claimed that Groundhog Day is a great and funny film but there is always one thing that I find off each time I watch it. I decided to check if anyone had bothered to work out how many days were repeated in the film and of course they had. One blog had calculated that it was 33 years and 350 days or 12,395 times the day had repeated. This was mostly based on how proficient he became in ice sculpting, French poetry and the piano. And it is this last one that gets me every time.

On the last day, at the party, where Phil Connors is playing the piano on stage, the piano teacher is there and says, “he’s my student.” Now, he may have lived through 12,395 days and everyone and everything would be familiar to him but to everyone else they just met him that day. Being so proficient in piano by now he would not have gone for a lesson and therefore she would not know him.

What day would I pick to do over and over? I cannot answer that because, whilst it is the time of year that I do wish I could turn back time, I don’t have memories of one outstanding day. I’d rather redo my whole life which is why I wrote Rewind. Are you getting deja vu? I may have mentioned that before.
