Red the Dead

Thirty years of the Premier League and officially the worst season for the red half of Manchester. It made me wonder about a comparison of the first PL league team that won the inaugural season and the bunch of misfits we have now.

Schmeichel
Parker
Bruce
Pallister
Irwin
Ince
Sharpe
Giggs
McClair
Hughes
Cantona

This was the starting line up against Blackburn the last game of the 1992/93 season. Compare this to the starting line up from last night.

De Gea
Telles
Varane
Lindelof
Dalot
McTominy
Matic
Fernandes
Mata
Elanga
Ronaldo

One does not ask who from the 92/93 team would get in the current team. No, one asks, who from this team could force their way into the 92/93 team. De Gea, Fernandes and Ronaldo possibly, but they would all probably be on the bench.

I didn’t mention the substitutes. In 92/93 Robson and Kanchleskis came off the bench but there is no one of that standing on the current bench.

That 90’s team grafted and fought, had proper attackers and goals throughout the team. It was that team that fostered the never beaten era, with those two headers from Steve Bruce against Sheffield Wednesday, in what would later be coined Fergie time. We spend more time now passing back and square now than attacking. Other sides were scared of that team, now any side would like to play us every week.

There has been nothing but excuses all season from one poor performance to another – a permanently broken record. We need a fast solution.

Fight
Attack
Score
Triumph
